We have a great display at our main site, 575 Sawyers Arms Road, Harewood, Christchurch. They are also on various display boards of stockists (Placemakers, Bunnings, Mitre 10, ITM) around the South Island. Where can I see your pavers?
Can we drive on your pavers?
For concrete pavers they can be driven on, but are more commonly used as a border or feature to break up an asphalt, concrete or exposed aggregate driveway. If they are to be driven on (non-commercial) then they must be laid on a concrete base so there is no substrate movement. The granite setts (70/100mm deep) are designed for driving on and give a fantastic finish.
Are your pavers slippery?
All our pavers meet New Zealand Standards NZS3116:2002 for slip resistance. Some are better than others, with the Honed and Smooth pavers being the least slip resistant. Sealing pavers can also make them less slip resistant.
Can the pavers be cut?
Yes, they can be cut using a diamond blade, which can be hired from your local hire company, or mark the pavers you want cut and bring them to Urban Paving as we offer a cutting service.
How much do your pavers cost?
They vary in price from around $30 per metre for natural concrete to $95 per metre for honed paving.
Are your products easy to clean?
Yes, for the Concrete pavers simply use a cleaning solution like 30 seconds to get rid of any moss or mildew, or a hydrochloric acid clean for other stains (refer information section). For the Natural Stone (Indian Sandstone etc) a waterblast is most effective, or contact us for assistance to remove any stains. DO NOT use hydrochloric acid for cleaning Natural Stone.
Can you deliver the pavers?
Yes, we can arrange the pavers to be delivered to your home, but there will be a charge (approx $45 per pallet within Christchurch. Quotes will be required for delivery outside Christchurch). For delivery there is the option of a hiab or forklift (useful for getting to the back of a house where the truck can not access).
Can I use Urban Pavers inside?
Yes, some of our pavers can be used inside, particularly the Honed Indian Sandstone range.
Can I lay the pavers over existing concrete?
In most circumstances yes, - the important thing is that it is firm and there is minimal movement. Like a road, the end product of paving will only be as good as the base.
Can I lay your pavers?
Yes, a DIY can lay our pavers, but you will need some skills to do the best job. There are many factors to consider, type of site, drainage, base, laying them on sand or mortar, grouting etc. We have a laying installation guide to install for your assistance.
Do Urban Paving have contractors you can recommend to install pavers?
Yes, we have good contractors we can recommend to you, refer to our links for contractors in your area.
Should I seal my paving?
This varies on what look you want and the different installation, so you must consider the reasons for sealing. Sealing pavers is similar to varnishing timber. The benefits are, it will hold the depth of colour, especially for darker coloured pavers, it will help protect the pavers from staining, make them easier to clean and reduces the amount of fungal and mould growth. Alternatively, by not sealing, the pavers will age and weather naturally. There is also some ongoing maintenance.theywill need to be resealed every 2 – 10 years (depends on type of sealant, usage and environment). There is no right or wrong between sealing or not, - you need to consider what you are trying to achieve by sealing the pavers.
How many pavers do I need per square metre?
For 500x500 size pavers you need 4 per m2. To work out other sizes per m2 refer to the chart in our concrete products section.
How heavy is a pallet of pavers?
A pallet holds 40 concrete pavers for sizes above 400x400mm. A pallet of 400’s pavers weighs 620kg, a pallet of 500’s weighs 900kg and a pallet of 600’s weighs 1300kg.
What size pavers do the pavers come in?
Our pavers come in New Zealand’s widest range of sizes. Refer to the products to get the details of the different sizes.
Are the pavers available in different textures/finishes?
Yes, for the concrete pavers there are 5 different textures and for the Indian Sandstone there are 4 different finishes.
Can I choose the thickness of Natural Stone Paving?
Yes you can. Our standard thickness is 20 or 25mm, depending on paver size, but you can order pavers down to around 15mm or up to around 50mm.
For concrete and honed pavers can I get them thinner or thicker than the 40mm?
For our concrete and honed pavers we can make a special thinner paver to order, down to 20mm for most pavers. As these pavers are thinner they need to be laid by a professional, with full mortar coverage underneath. We can not make thicker pavers with our current moulds, but if you are interested in a large quantity we could get some moulds specially made for you.
How thick are our pavers?
Nominal thickness of all our concrete paving is 40mm, but there can be a variation of +/-2mm as they are handmade. Any variation in thickness is easily taken up when mortared (our preferred method of installation). The honed pavers are slightly thinner at around 38mm +/-2mm (they are slightly thinner due to the honing). The Indian Sandstone thicknesses are all different depending on their size and the product ordered.
What is efflorescence?
Efflorescence is the natural salts in the raw materials of the paver migrating to the surface as water moves in and out of the paver. This will occur to some extent on all pavers, sometimes it will not be visible (lighter colour pavers, little water movement and good drainage under the pavers) and in some cases the efflorescence will be more obvious (darker colour pavers, lots of water movement and poorer drainage). Refer to the ‘What is efflorescence’ PDF in the ‘Information’ section for a full article on efflorescence by the Cement & Concrete Association of New Zealand.
I have a specific colour I want, can you make it?
We can manufacture colours outside our standard colour range at a small additional charge. Please contact us for the options.
Will the colour fade?
Over time the pavers will age and weather naturally and as part of this process there will be some initial fading. When this initial fading has finished the pavers will change very little as we use specially designed formulations and oxide:cement ratios to ensure the colours remain colourfast.
Is the colour right through the paver?
Yes, the colour is mixed right through our specially formulated mixes. If you see a paver cut you will see the colour right through the paver. We put the colour right through the mix to ensure it does not have that painted look, and that as it ages and weathers it will have a natural look.
How long will I have to wait for my pavers and do you stock the pavers?
We keep the main sizes of the plain (natural) and some of the coloured concrete pavers in stock. For custom orders it will take between 2 – 4 weeks (includes curing time), depending on size of order, time of year etc. We stock the main sizes and colours of Indian Sandstone (natural stone paving). For indent orders it takes 8 plus weeks, depending on size of order and when the next container is coming in. Honed pavers are all made to order, except for a few overruns that will be in stock.
Do you sell seconds?
Yes, the seconds are available 20 – 60% cheaper than normal price. They are all at our Urban Paving yard, 575 Sawyers Arms Road, Harewood, Christchurch. Just come in and have a look.
Can we freight the pavers anywhere in New Zealand?
Yes, we already freight to all parts of New Zealand. Contact us and we will get a price for delivered to your town.

Do you have a colour chart/swatch?
Yes, we do have a colour swatch. This can be found in the different paver sections of this website. The colours are only a representation and not an exact match due to variations in the printing process, computer screens and so on. We do supply samples at no charge which will give a better representation of colour.
